Weight Sense News... FirstLine Therapy Introduced at Derry Medical Center Weight Sense at Derry Medical Center is expanding its program offerings and is showcasing the FirstLine Therapy Center for Excellence. FirstLine Therapy is targeted to help patients looking to improve or maintain health as well as those challenged by a number of chronic conditions. “Many people struggle with health problems that are largely linked with life-style behaviors,” explains Susan Olson, RD, LD, CDE, Program Manager and Registered Dietitian. “Our goal is to help everyone achieve their health goals. We work with patients to address the underlying causes of their health issues which make this program especially appropriate for patients with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, metabolic syndrome and many other conditions.” The FirstLine Therapy Program offers participants a combination of support and guidance for successful lifestyle changes using a whole foods, Mediterranean style diet, an exercise plan, stress management and the option of including medical foods and nutritional supplements. It consists of a 12-week program that offers comprehensive clinical tests including blood work and body index assessments. Patients meet with the trained staff to establish their goals and outline their program. For twelve weeks, participants track their progress, receive weekly counseling, and are educated on the tools and skills to incorporate these changes. Body composition tests and behavior diaries are used to monitor progress periodically. At the conclusion of the program, patients can choose to continue with a maintenance plan. “FirstLine Therapy helps participants look at a lifestyle that helps prevent and manage disease for the long term and improves their overall health,” explains Olson. “We teach people how to make choices every day that will enhance their well-being. Research shows that achievable lifestyle modifications produce tremendous results without the use of costly prescription drugs” For more information about FirstLine Therapy, call Sue Olson at 603-537-1393 or click here for more information. National Nutrition Month® Celebrated at Derry Medical Center As part of this national recognition, Derry Medical Center will be sponsoring a free information and screening clinic on Tuesday, March 17 from 10AM to noon in the lobby of Derry Medical Center at 6 Tsienneto Road in Derry. Staff members from Weight Sense will provide information about achieving weight loss goals including recipes and snacks. Free blood glucose testing will be offered by the staff of Diabetes Healthcare of NH. This event is offered free of charge and is open to the public. Registration is not required. Weight Sense at Derry Medical Marks Milestone With beach weather just around the corner, patients of Weight Sense at the Derry Medical Center have more to celebrate than just the arrival of warm weather. As a group, they have dropped 2,000 pounds since the program began in October, 2007. “What makes Weight Sense different,” says Sue Olson, Program Manager, “is that it is a medically based weight-loss treatment program that combines a nutritionally complete meal plan with intensive lifestyle education, personalized attention and follow-up support.” “We want the Weight Sense experience to be successful for each patient,” Olson explains, “and tailor the program in a way that helps each person achieve their personal goals. We know that sheer will power often isn’t enough, and we teach techniques and skills that help our clients lose weight and keep it off.” The approach clearly works. Joyce Wheeler of Derry (NH) has lost 50 pounds in 24 weeks. “I look better and feel better,” she says. “My cholesterol is lower, my blood pressure is lower, I have a better self image and I am a better example for my kids.” Andrew Emerson of Hudson (NH) credits the Weight Sense staff for his tremendous success. He says, “My doctor suggested I try Weight Sense as a last ditch try to lose weight without surgery. My goal of losing 140 lbs. seemed daunting at first, though five months in, I am already down almost 100 pounds… The support system that is set up by the Weight Sense staff is phenomenal! Each staff member is knowledgeable about the process and unbelievably supportive as well! “I am excited to be part of a wonderful program like this that helps patients of Derry Medical Center/Londonderry Family Practice feel so much better both physically and emotionally,” says John Daley, MD, Medical Director. I think we succeed because patients do not go hungry – they can eat as much as they want of nutritional, low-calorie food that is satisfying. Furthermore, I think the wonderful support of our awesome staff is just what people need to succeed, and our medical supervision by nurses, physicians, and physician assistants makes this different from other weight loss programs.” Free information sessions are held on Mondays from noon to 1PM and on Thursdays from 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM at Weight Sense at the Derry Medical Center Office at Overlook Medical Park in Derry.
